Introduction to Cryptography, Certificates, and PKI
Cryptography is essential for private communications over an unsecure, public medium such as the Internet. It is one of the enabling technologies for e-commerce and virtual private networks (VPNs), as well as secure operating systems. This tutorial will define the major features provided by cryptography as well as the different types of cryptographic algorithms. Certificates and a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) will become more prevalent as anyone-to-anyone secure communication becomes increasingly common; these topics will also be addressed along with common examples of their use today.
TOPICS:
• Definition of terms
• Cryptography and e-commerce
• History and evolution of cryptography
• Types of cryptographic algorithms
• Typical hybrid cryptosystem
• Trust models
• Digital certificates
• Digital signatures and the law
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Network security administrators, VPN implementers
